CEDAR CULTURAL CENTER
On Sunday, February 13, 2011, the Cedar Cultural Center will host the mother of all group projects: a live music event featuring the work of experimental musicians, young designers, new media specialists, and an upstart non-profit. In partnership with the Jerome Foundation, The Cedar has commissioned seven local artists to compose, practice and perform new music pieces in collaboration with other local musicians from divergent cultures and musical genres. Performing in this year’s 416 Club series are: Aby Wolf, Dessa, Adam Levy, Jacqueline Ultan, Zach Kline and Marc Anderson. February 13th’s LISTEN UP event will feature grant winner Holly Muñoz.
Muñoz, founder of the independent recording company Draw Fire Records, will perform an experimental project in collaboration with Markus Lunkenheimer. Lunkenheimer is best known for using his circuit keyboard Clorox bottle with Twin Cities noise rockers Skoal Kodiak. Also on the bill are Ghostband and Clustercuss. John Kim, theorist and practitioner of new media and professor in Humanities and Media and Cultural Studies at Macalester College, will moderate short Q&A discussions with each performer.
Rock Star Supply Co. is proud to co-sponsor LISTEN UP. RSS Co. is a non-profit organization working to improve public schools by placing tutors and volunteers in the classroom for the sole purpose of helping the teacher in any way they see fit. RSS Co. thinks anyone who wants to tutor is a Rock Star and will be on hand at the Cedar to talk more about volunteer opportunities.
To promote this event, Muñoz and RSS Co. have partnered with graphic design students from the University of Minnesota and new media students from Macalester College. These students were deeply involved in positioning the LISTEN UP event to engage the creative arts community of the Twin Cities to help improve educational outcomes for teens in St Paul.
