What is Americana? Is it just the sad moan of a country fiddle, the plaintive wail of a pedal steel? Or is it something deeper than that – is it the sense of lonesomeness that comes from a life lived in open spaces and makes its way into the very music an artist creates?

On his first solo CD Enemy Swimmer, singer/songwriter Adam Svec shows that the plains of South Dakota are not all that far from the plains of Texas. Svec, who normally writes and performs with the indie-rock band The Glad Version, wrote a bunch of songs that needed the quiet solitude of acoustic guitar and a spare performance to underscore the intensity of his narrative. On Enemy Swimmer, he cuts out all of the gloss and bares his soul about lost loves, lost faith and losing himself.
