Song A Day VII Starts Today!

March 1st, 2011

The premise is simple — for one month out of every year, write and record an original piece of music for every single day of that month. No backlogging of songs, no sketching out lyrics for later use — just waking up each morning, coming up with an idea, exploring the idea throughout the day, recording it and posting it for the world to hear. Then doing it again 30 more days in a row.

Most people would not have the audacity or the fortitude to try this even once — but Sam Keenan is not like most people. He thrives on the challenge that such a compressed time frame offers, and so he begins his seventh annual “Song A Day” contest today.

According to Sam, the point of Song A Day “…is to not only accomplish the difficult mission of all that writing, but to explore directions, genres, and moods without the inner editor stifling the muse. Like a pop Jack Kerouac.”  You can check out his progress at samkeenan.org, where he will be posting his songs every day. You can also hear the madness that was Song A Day V and VI as well.

CEDAR CULTURAL CENTER

On Sunday, February 13, 2011, the Cedar Cultural Center will host the mother of all group projects: a live music event featuring the work of experimental musicians, young designers, new media specialists, and an upstart non-profit. In partnership with the Jerome Foundation, The Cedar has commissioned seven local artists to compose, practice and perform new music pieces in collaboration with other local musicians from divergent cultures and musical genres. Performing in this year’s 416 Club series are: Aby Wolf, Dessa, Adam Levy, Jacqueline Ultan, Zach Kline and Marc Anderson. February 13th’s LISTEN UP event will feature grant winner Holly Muñoz.

Muñoz, founder of the independent recording company Draw Fire Records, will perform an experimental project in collaboration with Markus Lunkenheimer. Lunkenheimer is best known for using his circuit keyboard Clorox bottle with Twin Cities noise rockers Skoal Kodiak. Also on the bill are Ghostband and Clustercuss. John Kim, theorist and practitioner of new media and professor in Humanities and Media and Cultural Studies at Macalester College, will moderate short Q&A discussions with each performer.

Rock Star Supply Co. is proud to co-sponsor LISTEN UP. RSS Co. is a non-profit organization working to improve public schools by placing tutors and volunteers in the classroom for the sole purpose of helping the teacher in any way they see fit. RSS Co. thinks anyone who wants to tutor is a Rock Star and will be on hand at the Cedar to talk more about volunteer opportunities.

To promote this event, Muñoz and RSS Co. have partnered with graphic design students from the University of Minnesota and new media students from Macalester College. These students were deeply involved in positioning the LISTEN UP event to engage the creative arts community of the Twin Cities to help improve educational outcomes for teens in St Paul.

Adam Svec “Rarefaction” CD Release Show

January 25th, 2010

rarefactionposteriiiAdam Svec will be releasing Rarefaction, his second solo CD, this Friday at the Kitty Cat Klub. Caroline Smith will open, and No Bird Sing will close the night. Only $5 for a great night of music — doors at 9pm.

“Svec’s sophomore solo album, Rarefaction, strips away much of TGV’s studio sheen and barbed guitars, and the mid-tempo minimalist pop songs leave plenty of room for his beguiling choir-boy tenor to command center stage, irrefutably making its mark as one of the strongest set of pipes on the Minnesota music map.” — The Onion A.V. Club

“Adam Svec’s infectiously melodic voice might be the best thing you’ve never heard, and if you put it off much longer you could end up feeling like a chump next time someone drops his name.” — Lunch of Champions

Desdamona CD Release — This Saturday!

November 20th, 2009

desdamonainklingalbumcoverweb2Desdamona’s CD release party for Inkling is this Saturday at Sauce! With special guests Alicia Wiley, Ill Chemistry and Bill Mike, doors open at 9 — and it’s only $5!

She’s already received rave reviews from the press — a sampling include:

“…no one has more definitively put the alienation of female rap fans into words (”Don’t Listen to the Lyrics”) or identified the femininity that hip hop would deny in itself (”We Will Always B”). Those songs are reprised from previous albums, but seem purified here with voice alone—more what they’re meant to be.” (City Pages)

“As one of the co-founders of the B-Girl Be hip-hop festival, Desdamona knows the power of a woman and her voice. That’s what’s all over ‘Inkling,’ which strips away the instrumentation and offers Desdamona straight up and in your face. Despite the parental-advisory sticker for language, it’s highly recommended for any teenage girls on your holiday list.” (Pioneer Press)

“Because she first made her mark as a spoken-word performer, it’s hard to believe Desdamona has never released a CD made up entirely of her poetry. Until now, that is. The only instrument featured on “Inkling,” the new 16-track collection by the Ill Chemistry songstress and B-Girls Be ringleader, is her voice. And what a powerful one it is.” (Star Tribune)

The Glad Version plays at the Entry this Friday, with High On Stress, The Mood Swings and The Snaps.
